The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the appointment of three advocates and one judicial officer as judges of the Uttarakhand High Court. The recommended lawyers are Rakesh Thapliyal, Pankaj Purohit, and Subhash Upadhyay, while the judicial officer is Vivek Bharti Sharma.
The recommendation was made by the Chief Justice of the High Court of Uttarakhand on September 7, 2022, in consultation with his two senior-most colleagues. The Governor and Chief Minister of the state have also concurred with the recommendation.
To ensure the suitability of the candidates, the Collegium consulted with judges of the Supreme Court familiar with the affairs of the Uttarakhand High Court. After considering all relevant factors, the Collegium decided to recommend the four candidates for appointment as judges of the Uttarakhand High Court.
As of April 1, 2023, the Uttarakhand High Court has a sanctioned strength of 11 judges but is functioning with only 5 judges, leaving 6 vacancies. The appointment of the new judges will help the court tackle its pending cases and improve the efficiency of its judicial processes.
