Two men accused of gang-raping a Muslim woman during the 2013 communal riots in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh have been sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment by a trial court. The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Anjani Kumar Singh, convicted and sentenced Maheshvir and Sikander for offences under Sections 376(2)(g), 376D and 506 of the Indian Penal Code. The victim had approached the Supreme Court in April 2023 through advocate Vrinda Grover praying for an expedited trial, alleging that the investigation was biased and there was a deliberate delay in the trial. The top court directed the trial court to hear the case on a day-to-day basis. Out of the seven women who had alleged that they were raped during the communal riots, six withdrew their complaints, and only the present victim continued with the case. The riots took place in 2013, following the murder of three youths in Kawal town.
