The Jiah Khan death case came to an end on Friday with the acquittal of actor Sooraj Pancholi, but not without various unusual turns in the legal arena.
After Jiah's death in 2013, her mother Rabia found a letter allegedly written by Jiah describing her tumultuous relationship with Pancholi. He was arrested on charges of abetment to suicide, but was later granted bail by the Bombay High Court.
Rabia believed that her daughter was murdered and sought a CBI probe, even approaching the United States authorities for assistance. However, the CBI charged Sooraj for abetment to suicide in December 2015.
The trial commenced in March 2019, but in 2021, the sessions court hearing the case said it did not have the jurisdiction to hear the CBI case, leading to its transfer to a special CBI court. The trial was expedited in January 2023, and on April 20, the special court reserved its verdict before delivering it on Friday.
