The Supreme Court is set to hear a plea on August 9 regarding the postponement of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Postgraduate (NEET PG 2024). Scheduled for August 11, the exam has drawn attention due to concerns raised by candidates about the feasibility of reaching their assigned test centers.
Petition Details
The petition, filed by Vishal Soren, highlights significant issues faced by candidates. Soren's plea argues that many candidates have been allocated test centers in cities that are challenging to reach within the given timeframe. The allocation of test cities was finalized on July 31, with the designated centers to be announced on August 8. This tight schedule has left candidates with minimal time to travel, raising concerns about their ability to attend the exam.
Concerns Raised
In addition to logistical difficulties, the petitioners are seeking clarification on the formula for normalizing scores across the four sets of question papers. There is apprehension among candidates about potential arbitrariness in the normalisation process, as the formula has not been disclosed to them. The petitioners have requested that the exam be stayed until these issues are resolved.
Court Proceedings
The Supreme Court agreed to list the case for hearing on August 9 after the petitioner's counsel, advocate Anas Tanwir, brought it to the attention of Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud. The CJI directed the registry to schedule the hearing for the following day, acknowledging the urgency of the matter.
As the exam date approaches, candidates and stakeholders await the Court's decision on whether the NEET PG 2024 will proceed as planned or if a postponement will be granted.
