A group of Supreme Court lawyers recently protested against the resumption of serving of non-vegetarian food in the court canteen during the holy festival of Navratri.
The festival, celebrated by millions across India, is traditionally marked by fasting and vegetarian-only meals.
The lawyers argued that serving non-vegetarian food at this auspicious time is insensitive to the religious feelings of many festival-goers.
The protests began when the canteen resumed its regular menu, including non-vegetarian dishes, after a brief hiatus during the first few days of Navratri.
The protesting lawyers submitted a formal request to the Supreme Court administration, urging them to limit the canteen offerings to vegetarian options until the conclusion of the festival. They emphasized that Navratri holds significant spiritual importance, and serving non-vegetarian food during this period could offend the beliefs of those observing it.
One of the protestors remarked:
“Navratri is a time of devotion and fasting for many of us. It is inappropriate for non-vegetarian food to be served during this time. We respect everyone’s dietary choices, but we believe the canteen should show cultural sensitivity during such festivals.”
The demonstration has generated a discussion about striking a balance between cultural and religious considerations in public institutions, even though the canteen authorities have not yet responded to the demands. This problem emphasizes how difficult it may be to accommodate different tastes in public areas, particularly when there are religious celebrations going on.
