In a potentially unprecedented move, Justice Sanjay Karol, a judge of the Supreme Court, recently appointed a group of young lawyers as Amici Curiae in transfer petitions.
Justice Karol explained that the responsibility of nurturing future legal professionals rests with judges. "We must always be mindful of our responsibility to cultivate the future," he stated.
On October 10, while hearing approximately 10 cases, primarily transfer petitions and bail applications, Justice Karol made this decision. In several transfer petitions where the spouse could not be represented despite notice, Justice Karol directed that the youngest lawyer present in the courtroom be appointed as amicus curiae.
This order was issued in six to seven cases. "I have always believed in promoting junior members of the bar and instilling in them the habit of being occupied," he added.
The cases were then adjourned, and the appointed Amici Curiae were instructed to review the briefs and be prepared. Advocate Pritthish Roy, who has been practicing law for three months, was among the youngest lawyers appointed as Amici Curiae.
