The Supreme Court of India has officially launched its new e-filing software, which was released in a test version earlier this month for crowd testing. The updated software will allow litigants and advocates to file cases, applications, miscellaneous documents, and pay court fees online. It also enables notification of defects, access to digitised paper-books, and sharing them with senior advocates, among other features. Notably, printing charges will not be levied. The new software will replace the existing e-filing software from July 22, 2023. The top court's e-committee, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, has been actively promoting e-filing across courts and tribunals in India. In October 2021, it directed all High Courts to ensure that all cases filed by the government are through e-filing mode. The CJI has been advocating for digitisation of court records and reducing carbon footprints by eliminating the need for hard copies. The court has also directed Debts Recovery Tribunals and Debts Recovery Appellate Tribunals to set up comprehensive E-Sewa Kendras to facilitate e-filing.
