Supreme Court Refuses Stay on VHP Protests in Nuh Violence Case; Orders Stringent Measures to Prevent Hate Speech and Violence
The Supreme Court has declined to grant a stay on the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) protests scheduled for Wednesday in response to the communal violence that erupted in Nuh, Haryana. However, the Court has directed the State government and Delhi police to ensure that no hate speech or violence occurs during the rallies. A bench led by Justice Sanjiv Khanna stressed the importance of complying with the Supreme Court's earlier ruling against hate speech.
During the hearing, the Court urged the authorities to take necessary precautions, including deploying additional police forces and installing CCTV cameras in sensitive areas. The CCTV footage should be preserved for further investigation if required. The Court expressed concern over potential hate speeches and violence in the National Capital Region and emphasized the need to follow the law and maintain order.
The matter will be revisited on Friday for further deliberation. The urgent plea against the VHP protests was presented by Senior Advocate CU Singh, who expressed fears of hate speech and violence escalating if the protests proceeded.
The violence in Nuh district erupted when a mob attacked a VHP procession amid rumors of the involvement of cow vigilante Monu Manesar. The clashes resulted in the deaths of at least five people and injuries to around 70 individuals, including policemen. The police have taken action by registering approximately 40 cases and arresting over 80 people in connection with the communal violence.
The VHP had announced their intention to hold protests in the NCR on Wednesday to address the Nuh violence. However, the Court's orders aim to ensure that the demonstrations are conducted peacefully and without any inflammatory or violent incidents.
