Supreme Court Demands Updated Status Report on Manipur Violence Amid State's Claim of Improved Situation

"Supreme Court Adjourns Manipur Violence Plea, Seeks Updated Status Report as State Claims Improvement"

In a recent development, the Supreme Court has adjourned a plea related to the recent outbreak of violence in Manipur for a week. The decision came after the State government assured that it would submit an updated status report outlining the measures taken to address the situation. The Bench, headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud along with Justices PS Narasimha and Manoj Misra, was informed by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta that the situation was gradually improving. The Chief Justice emphasized the need for the report to include details such as rehabilitation camps, law and order, and the recovery of arms. During the hearing, Senior Advocate Colin Gonsalves highlighted the gravity of the situation, mentioning recent incidents, including the beheading of a tribal man. However, the Bench agreed to await the updated status report. The plea was filed by the Manipur Tribal Forum, alleging that the Central government's assurances regarding the violence were false. The Forum sought the deployment of the Army in tribal areas to restore control. The Court had previously been apprised of the escalating violence, including killings, displacement, and destruction of property, and had called for appropriate measures to be taken. The Forum contended that the violence was not merely a clash between tribal communities but was backed by the ruling party in power.
