"Srinagar Court Pronounces Verdict: Two Found Guilty in Nowshera Acid Attack on Law Student
In a significant development, a Srinagar court has delivered a verdict on Thursday, convicting two individuals for their involvement in a horrific acid attack on a law student that took place in the Nowshera area back in 2014.
Presided over by Principal Sessions Judge Jawad Ahmed, the court found Irshad Ahmad Wani, also known as Sunny, and Mohammad Umar Noor culpable under various sections of the Ranbir Penal Code. The charges include Section 326-A (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by use of acid, etc.), Section 120-B (Punishment for criminal conspiracy), and Section 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false evidence to screen offender).
The meticulous presentation of evidence by the prosecution left no room for doubt, leading the court to establish the guilt of the accused beyond reasonable doubt.
In the court's words, 'The consolidated weight of established facts, surrounding circumstances, and the unbroken chain of evidence leaves no reasonable alternative but to conclude that the reprehensible act of acid assault on the victim was perpetrated by accused No. 2, Mohammad Umar, in furtherance of the conspiracy orchestrated by accused No. 1, Irshad Wani.'
Consequently, both accused individuals were found guilty and have been convicted accordingly.
The proceedings will continue on August 19, during which arguments will be heard to determine the appropriate sentencing for the convicted duo.
The acid attack, which shook the community, occurred on December 11, 2014, prompting law enforcement to file a criminal case at the Soura police station in Srinagar.
Investigations unveiled that Irshad had been stalking the survivor over an extended period, having previously proposed to her. However, upon her rejection, he resorted to the heinous act of acid assault. It was revealed that Irshad collaborated with his friend Mohammad Omar to plan and execute the attack, as affirmed by the police.
The incident sparked widespread condemnation from all corners of society. In response, local authorities instructed Deputy Commissioners to enforce a prohibition on the sale of acid, considering the severity of the case.
In a subsequent development, the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, on December 17, 2014, directed the government to grant a compensation of ₹3 lakh to the survivor of the acid attack."
