Javed Akhtar Challenges Magistrate's Summons in Kangana Ranaut Complaint, Alleges Miscarriage of Justice
Renowned lyricist Javed Akhtar has taken legal action by approaching a sessions court in Mumbai to contest a Magistrate court's order summoning him in response to a complaint lodged by Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut. The complaint accuses Akhtar of criminal intimidation and insulting the modesty of a woman.
In the plea filed through advocate Jay Bharadwaj, Akhtar claimed that the Magistrate hastily jumped to conclusions, leading to a serious miscarriage of justice. Ranaut's complaint dates back to an incident in 2020 when Akhtar allegedly invited her to his place to resolve a dispute with actor Hrithik Roshan. During the meeting, Ranaut asserted that when she refused to apologize to Roshan, Akhtar threatened and insulted her, allegedly committing the offense of extortion.
Ranaut's complaint included allegations of criminal conspiracy, extortion, and insulting her modesty by invading her privacy. After recording her statement on July 6, the court acknowledged the complaint on July 24. The Magistrate, RM Shaikh at Andheri, took cognizance of the complaint regarding criminal intimidation and insulting modesty, dismissing the extortion charges against Akhtar.
However, Javed Akhtar challenged the order, contending that there was no concrete evidence in the judicial records to justify the summons. Moreover, he argued that Ranaut's complaint was time-barred as per the Indian Penal Code (IPC), as it was filed more than five years after the alleged incident, exceeding the three-year limitation for offenses under Sections 506 and 509 of the IPC.
The plea is set to be heard by the sessions judge on August 8, where Akhtar hopes to obtain a favorable resolution to the ongoing legal dispute.
