Former Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Mukhtar Ansari has been handed a life imprisonment sentence by a Varanasi Court on June 5. The conviction is related to the murder of Awadhesh Rai, the brother of ex-MLA Ajay Rai, who was shot dead in Varanasi in August 1991. At the time of the incident, Ajay Rai and his brother were standing outside their house when Ansari and other assailants arrived in a car and opened fire, resulting in Awadhesh's death. Ansari, who is currently in Banda jail, has faced multiple legal proceedings in the past. This recent sentence adds to a series of convictions, including a 10-year imprisonment and a fine of ₹5 lakh in an earlier kidnapping and murder case. Additionally, he has been sentenced to seven years in prison for intimidating a jailer and five years under the Gangsters Act for various heinous offenses. Ansari has also been implicated in the kidnapping of a Vishwa Hindu Parishad office-bearer and coal tycoon in 1996 and the murder of a Bharatiya Janata Party MLA in 2005.
