Kerala High Court Grants Anticipatory Bail to Congress Leader K Sudhakaran and Former DIG S Surendran in Monson Mavunkal's Fake Antiques Scam

In a significant development, the Kerala High Court has granted anticipatory bail to K Sudhakaran, the President of Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee, and former DIG S Surendran. The two individuals are accused of involvement in the notorious fake antiques scam allegedly orchestrated by Monson Mavunkal.

Justice Ziyad Rahman AA had previously provided interim anticipatory bail to the accused. On Wednesday, the court made this interim bail absolute, under the condition that Sudhakaran and Surendran continue to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation.

The court order stated, "Considering the entire facts and circumstances of the case and also the fact that the interrogation of the petitioners is over, the interim bail to them can be made absolute on the condition that the petitions continue to cooperate with the investigation by making themselves available for investigation."

Apart from Sudhakaran and Surendran, the court also considered the anticipatory bail application filed by G Lakshman, Inspector General of Police, who is also an accused in the case. The court extended its previous order of granting him interim anticipatory bail until the next date of hearing.

Monson Mavunkal came into the limelight when reports emerged of him allegedly swindling people out of more than ₹10 crore through the sale of fake antiques.

The accusations against Sudhakaran and Surendran suggest their presence during the transaction of money to the main accused, Mavunkal. They have been booked for offences punishable under Sections 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating), 471 (fraudulently using a forged document), and 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Earlier, the court had granted them interim anticipatory bail with the condition to surrender before the Investigation Officer as per the issued notice and execute a bond of ₹50,000 each.

With the conclusion of their interrogation and their cooperation in the investigation, the court disposed of the matter by making the interim order absolute on Wednesday.
