Kerala High Court and District Courts Harness AI Tool 'Anuvadini' for Malayalam Translation of Judgments
Anuvadini, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool developed by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) under the Ministry of Education, has been adopted by the Kerala High Court and District Courts to translate court judgments into Malayalam, the state's vernacular language. According to a press release from the High Court, more than 317 High Court judgments and over 5,136 District Court judgments have already been translated using Anuvadini and published on the respective court websites.
The initiative was spearheaded by Justice A Muhamed Mustaque, Chairman of the Computerisation Committee, along with the support of Justices Raja Vijayaraghavan V and Kauser Edappagath, who are members of the Artificial Intelligence Assisted Legal Translation Advisory Committee.
The press release revealed that the first phase of the project aimed to translate and make available all certified judgments for reporting in Malayalam. Furthermore, there are plans to share the translated versions with the Legal Service Authority to promote legal education and awareness among government departments, stakeholders, and litigants.
By implementing Anuvadini, the Kerala High Court seeks to enhance access to justice, improve transparency, and facilitate wider dissemination of court orders and judgments, thereby promoting legal awareness and understanding.
