The Central government has given its approval for the appointment of Justice Robin Phukan as a permanent judge of the Gauhati High Court. The decision was announced by the Union Law Minister on his Twitter handle. The appointment was made on the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium, which had suggested Justice Phukan's name for the post on May 3. Prior to this, the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court and two other senior judges had recommended Justice Phukan's appointment on March 23. The file from the Department of Justice, along with inputs from the Chief Ministers and Governors of the northeastern states, was received by the Supreme Court Collegium in April. As of May 1, the Gauhati High Court is operating with 24 judges, with a vacancy of six against a sanctioned strength of 30.
