The plea seeking the enactment of an Advocates Protection Act for the national capital has prompted the Delhi High Court to issue a notice to both the Central and Delhi governments. Justice Prathiba M Singh has ordered the Bar Council of Delhi (BCD) and Coordination Committee of District Bar Associations to submit a status report on their discussions regarding the drafting of the Advocates Protection Bill.
The BCD and Coordination Committee are said to be in the process of drafting the bill and have been discussing the issue with senior government officials, including Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, and the law secretary.
The plea was filed by advocates Deepa Joseph and Alpha Phiris Dayal in response to the increasing incidents of violence against lawyers in Delhi's courts. The Court has listed the matter for further hearing on May 25. The plea was filed in the aftermath of the murder of advocate Virender Narwal, who was shot dead in Dwarka last week.
The petition highlights the urgent need for the enactment of the Advocates Protection Act in Delhi to ensure the safety and security of lawyers practicing in the city.
