"Delhi High Court to Hear PIL Seeking Ban on Opposition's 'INDIA' Acronym for Alliance
A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed before the Delhi High Court urging a restraint on opposition parties from using the acronym INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance) for their alliance. The petition, filed by activist Girish Bharadwaj through advocate Vaibhav Singh, is scheduled for hearing on Friday before Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Sanjeev Narula.
The alliance, consisting of 26 opposition parties, recently announced its formation during a gathering in Bengaluru, with plans to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections together against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
The petitioner pointed out the statements made by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, arguing that they presented the name 'INDIA' as the "name of Our Nation" and insinuated a conflict between the NDA/BJP and the country itself.
Bharadwaj's plea emphasized that Rahul Gandhi's statement caused confusion among the general public, suggesting that the upcoming elections would be fought between the NDA alliance and the nation 'INDIA'.
Earlier, the petitioner had submitted a representation to the Election Commission of India (ECI), but no action was taken, leading him to seek legal recourse through the Court."
