Delhi High Court Orders Mehul Choksi to Deposit ₹2 Lakh for Pre-Screening Plea of Netflix's 'Bad Boy Billionaires'
The Delhi High Court has recently ruled that fugitive businessman and accused in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam, Mehul Choksi, must deposit ₹2 lakh as a condition to proceed with the hearing of his appeal seeking a pre-screening of the Netflix docu-series 'Bad Boy Billionaires'. Justices Vibhu Bakhru and Amit Mahajan of the Division Bench issued the order, taking into account Choksi's non-citizen status and the pending proceedings against him, including those related to outstanding dues.
The Court stated that if Choksi's appeal is unsuccessful and costs are awarded to the respondent, recovering the amount may be challenging. To secure the costs of the present proceeding, the Court directed Choksi to deposit ₹2,00,000/- within a week from the date of the order with the Court's registry.
The case will be further considered on August 4. Previously, Choksi had filed a plea seeking a preview of the Netflix series, citing concerns that it might infringe on his right to a fair investigation and trial. However, a single-judge had dismissed the petition, stating that Choksi could seek an alternative remedy by approaching the civil court.
Mehul Choksi and his nephew, Nirav Modi, are both accused in the ₹13,500 crore PNB fraud case. Choksi left India in 2019 and is currently a citizen of Antigua and Barbuda. The 'Bad Boy Billionaires' Netflix series, released in October 2020, includes an episode that deals with the allegations against Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi.
