The Delhi High Court recently denied anticipatory bail to a student involved in a violent altercation among law students at Delhi University. The incident, which took place late at night, involved a brawl where students reportedly used hockey sticks, lathis, and iron rods to assault each other. Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma, who led the Bench, expressed deep concern over the incident, stating, “The court finds such events deeply troubling, especially when they involve law students who will soon take on significant roles as lawyers or law officers. While these conflicts might appear as simple group disputes, they necessitate thorough examination and investigation.”
The Court highlighted its dismay at witnessing law students engaging in such violent behavior, noting the troubling nature of the incident. Justice Sharma remarked, “It is distressing to see law students, who are expected to uphold legal principles, participating in such fights. This matter requires serious attention.” Advocate Suresh Chandra Sati represented the petitioner, while Assistant Public Prosecutor Raghvinder Verma appeared for the opposing side. The petitioner’s defense argued that their client had only used fists and caused minimal harm, challenging the severity of the accusations. They also suggested that the case was influenced by a senior judicial officer connected to the complainant, but the court dismissed this claim as unfounded and harmful to the judicial process.
