CBI to Probe Horrific Incident of Two Manipuri Women Paraded Naked and Molested; Central Government Requests Trial Transfer Outside Manipur
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will take charge of the investigation into the appalling incident where two Manipuri women from the Kuki tribe were paraded naked and subjected to molestation, as disclosed by the Central government to the Supreme Court on Thursday.
The government emphasized its zero tolerance towards crimes against women, vowing to handle such heinous offenses seriously to ensure justice and act as a deterrent nationwide, as stated in their affidavit.
Citing the need for an impartial investigation, the Central government, with the State government's consent, opted for the independent agency CBI to conduct the probe.
The affidavit assured that the investigation would be swiftly completed, followed by a time-bound trial. However, the government insisted that the trial must take place outside Manipur.
Hence, the Central government appealed to the apex court to intervene and direct the transfer of the investigation to a different state.
The suo motu case was registered by the Supreme Court after the shocking video of the incident went viral on social media, causing widespread outrage.
As of now, seven suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident and are in police custody, facing charges that include rape and murder.
This tragic incident adds to the ongoing tensions and violence in Manipur, which is rooted in the dispute between certain tribes and the demand from the Meitei community for Scheduled Tribe status.
The incident, which occurred on May 4, came to light through a distressing video that captured the women being molested by a mob while being paraded naked towards a paddy field.
According to Mint, the women were also subjected to gang rape during the horrifying ordeal.
