The Calcutta High Court has declined to provide an urgent hearing for two public interest litigation (PIL) petitions challenging the West Bengal government's ban on the screening of the controversial film, The Kerala Story. A division bench, comprising acting Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya, stated that the matter was not urgent and advised the advocates to file the petition for due course. The court also informed the counsel that the case would be heard eventually, but it did not require an urgent hearing. The petitioners have contended that a movie cannot be prohibited from being screened by the government simply by issuing a notification. Meanwhile, a plea has already been filed before the Supreme Court by the filmmakers challenging the West Bengal government's decision to ban the movie.
