On July 22, the High Court Bar Association, Calcutta, decided to abstain from all court proceedings following an incident involving the assault of a lawyer by police personnel.
During an emergency general body meeting held on the same day, the Association passed a resolution stating:
"Members of the Bar resolve to refrain from participating in judicial proceedings before this Hon'ble Court until the implicated police officer is immediately suspended and appropriate actions are taken against those responsible for the assault on the advocate."
The Association reported that Advocate Sourav Mandal was "brutally" assaulted by sub-inspector Sudipto Sanyal on July 21 while representing a client at the Nepalganj police outpost. The sub-inspector is also accused of threatening to file a public nuisance case against Mandal under Section 292 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and to falsely implicate him in narcotics charges.
Mandal, who is a member of the High Court Bar Association, has submitted a formal complaint to higher police officials, including medical evidence and a request to preserve CCTV footage from the Nepalganj police outpost.
In response to these events, the Association has called for its members to boycott court proceedings until the police officer in question is suspended and the necessary measures are taken against those involved.
