"Bombay High Court Directs Maharashtra Government to Provide Details on Child Marriage Prohibition Officers"
A division bench of Acting Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Arif Doctor has ordered the Maharashtra government to submit information regarding the appointment of Child Marriage Prohibition Officers (CMPO) within the state. The court has requested the government to file an affidavit addressing several aspects, including the number of CMPOs currently appointed and whether the existing number is sufficient or if more officers are required. Additionally, the court has sought details regarding the effectiveness of CMPOs in preventing child marriages, such as the number of marriages prohibited and any disciplinary actions taken against officers failing to fulfill their duties. The deadline for filing the affidavit has been set as August 2, 2023. The court emphasized the importance of adequate officer appointments and strict supervision to ensure effective prevention of child marriages. These directions were issued in response to a public interest litigation highlighting issues related to child marriages in Maharashtra and alleged non-implementation of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act (PCMA). The plea sought the framing and implementation of rules to enforce the PCMA.
