On Sunday, the Bar Council of India and State Bar Councils held a joint meeting where they called on the Indian government to create a law safeguarding the lives and interests of advocates and their families. The proposed law would also provide compensation in case of bodily harm or injury to the advocates or their families. During the meeting, the BCI also suggested that the Supreme Court defer to the legislative process when it comes to the issue of same-sex marriage, as any potential changes could impact the fundamental social structure of India's diverse society. Other topics discussed included uniform enrolment fees and the regulation of foreign lawyers and foreign law firms in India. The meeting was led by Manan Kumar Mishra, Chairman of the Bar Council of India, and ended with a vote of thanks from S Prabakaran, Vice-Chairman of the BCI.
