A Delhi court recently summoned India Today, its Chairman Aroon Purie, Vice Chairman Kallie Purie, and other officials in a criminal defamation case filed by Senior Advocate Pradeep Rai.Judicial Magistrate Tarunpreet Kaur of Patiala House Courts issued the order on July 26 after determining that India Today had defamed Rai by linking him to conman Sanjay Sherpuria.
“Let summons be issued to accused 1. Aroon Purie (Chairman, India Today Group), 2. Kallie Purie (Vice Chairman, India Today Group), 3. Supriya Prasad (Managing Editor, Tak Channels), 4. Milind Khandekar (Managing Editor) and 5. India Today on filing of PF within 15 days from today, for offence under section 500 IPC, for the NDOH (next date of hearing),” the Court stated.
Rai has filed a defamation suit against India Today and its officials over two articles published on the Aaj Tak news channel's website, alleging that Rai was called for questioning by the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) in connection with the Sanjay Sherpuria case.
According to Rai, the articles are defamatory and falsely claim that he is the nephew of conman Sanjay Rai Sherpuria. Additionally, Rai has sued ABP News for criminal defamation, leading the court to summon the channel and its officials in that case.
Sherpuria, a businessman from Lucknow, was arrested for allegedly collecting money from several individuals by claiming close ties with the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) and senior bureaucrats.
