"Amal Jyothi College of Engineering Seeks Kerala High Court's Intervention for Police Protection Amidst Protests Following Tragic Hostel Suicide"
Amidst ongoing protests by student political bodies following a student's tragic suicide in the college hostel, Amal Jyothi College of Engineering has filed a petition in the Kerala High Court. The case, titled Amal Jyothi College of Engineering & Anr. v State of Kerala & Ors., is scheduled for a hearing on Friday before Justice N Nagaresh.
The distressing incident occurred on June 2 when a 20-year-old female student was discovered hanging in her room at the college hostel. The incident sparked large-scale protests on the campus, with students taking to social media to raise concerns about various issues, including harassment from college staff and moral policing.
According to the college's plea, members of student political organizations such as the Students Federation of India (SFI), Kerala Students Union (KSU), Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), and Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) gathered at the main gates of the campus on June 6. Allegedly, they shouted abusive slogans and obstructed entry and exit paths to and from the college.
The plea further claims that some individuals conducted sit-ins in front of the college gate, resulting in a "hostage-like situation" and a breakdown of law and order. The college asserts that despite the presence of police personnel, no action was taken to control or disperse the crowd.
The petition emphasizes that the college's closure, compelled by the protests, has caused significant hardship to the institution, impacting university exams and the admission process for new students. Consequently, the college management seeks police protection for their staff, property, and the maintenance of law and order in the vicinity of the campus.
