Allahabad High Court Questions Union Government's Action in Public Interest under Cinematograph Act for 'Adipurush'

The Allahabad High Court has requested a response from the Union government regarding its intentions to protect public interest regarding the screening of the film "Adipurush." The court order, issued on June 27, has directed the Deputy Solicitor General to seek instructions from the Central Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Central Board of Film Certification. The court has also allowed the inclusion of Manoj Muntashir Shukla, the dialogue writer of the movie, as a party in the case.

During the hearing, the court questioned the adequacy of the film's disclaimer in claiming that it is not based on the Ramayana, as the film includes the depiction of characters such as Lord Rama, Devi Sita, Lord Hanuman, Ravan, Lanka, and others. The court expressed concerns about whether the disclaimer would convince the general public that the story is not related to the Ramayana.

One of the petitioners, represented by advocate Ranjana Agnihotri, raised objections to objectionable photographs sourced from the film, as well as certain dialogues and portrayals of the characters. The petitioners called for an immediate ban on the movie, alleging that it negatively impacts the sentiments of those who worship the characters and has the potential to cause social disharmony.

The plea filed by social activists Kuldeep Tiwari and Bandana Kumar asserts that the movie casts doubt on the integrity of the revered epic Ramayana and defames the cultural heritage of Ayodhya and the Hindu religion. The petitioners also criticized the film's trailer as clumsy and indecent, claiming that it hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus.

Despite an earlier notice issued by the Allahabad High Court to the Central Board of Film Certification in January 2023, the board has not yet responded to the matter. An amendment application has been filed to include the film's dialogue writer, Manoj Muntashir Shukla, as a party in the case, objecting to the dialogues written by him as being ridiculous, filthy, and against the glory of the Ramayan yug.

The matter is scheduled to be heard again in the afternoon.
