Former Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Mukhtar Ansari has been directed by the Allahabad High Court to be given "full security" by the Uttar Pradesh Police. The court has also prohibited the media from interviewing Ansari. The decision was made weeks after the killing of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf, who were shot dead on live television by three assailants posing as reporters. Ansari's wife had moved a plea seeking protection for her husband as he is apprehending a threat to his life in jail. The State had submitted that adequate security measures were being taken for Ansari's safety. The court clarified that the media ban was not against the concept of interviews but was being implemented to ensure the safety of Ansari. The court has sentenced Ansari to several years of imprisonment in multiple cases. He has over 56 cases of heinous nature against him and is considered a notorious criminal with an image of a "Robin Hood" in Northern India.
