Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Advocate Manjusha Ajay Deshpande as Bombay High Court Judge
In a significant development, the Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, has recommended the appointment of advocate Manjusha Ajay Deshpande as a judge of the Bombay High Court. The recommendation, originally made by the Bombay High Court Collegium on September 26, 2022, was put on hold for further evaluation. However, after considering the government's inputs, a report from the then ACJ of the High Court, and the opinions of three consultee judges, the Collegium has now deemed Deshpande suitable for elevation. This decision not only recognizes Deshpande's professional competence, especially in constitutional and service matters, but also highlights the importance of increasing women's representation on the Bench, particularly among women lawyers practicing before the Aurangabad Bench. The Bombay High Court currently operates with 63 judges out of a sanctioned strength of 94, leaving a vacancy of 31 positions as of June 1, 2023.
