Payal Maheshwari, the wife of the late gangster Sanjiv Maheshwari Jeeva, who was fatally shot at the Lucknow court premises, has approached the Supreme Court seeking permission to attend her husband's funeral. On Thursday, a bench consisting of Justices Aniruddha Bose and Rajesh Bindal assured that the matter would be heard and a decision would be made on Friday.
Sanjiv Jeeva, known to be associated with former UP MLA Mukhtar Ansari, was an accused in the murder case of senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Brahm Dutt Dwivedi. The incident took place at the Lucknow Civil Court. Uttar Pradesh Additional Advocate General (AAG) Ardhendumauli K Prasad informed the Supreme Court that the case would be heard the next day, while the petitioner's lawyer emphasized the need for closure for Jeeva's family, consisting of his three sons and daughter.
The UP AAG also mentioned that the body of the deceased gangster might be taken to Muzaffarnagar, the family's hometown, but stressed that Payal herself is named in the gangster chart. Nevertheless, the petitioner requested a day's protection to reach her family and participate in the funeral ceremony. Justice Bose assured that the matter would be deliberated upon and orders would be issued on Friday.
Later, Uttar Pradesh AAG Garima Prashad stated that the state had no objections to the petitioner attending the funeral, providing some relief to Payal Maheshwari.
