Uttar Pradesh Government Assures Supreme Court of Thorough Investigation in Atiq Ahmed Killing Case
The Uttar Pradesh government has submitted a status report to the Supreme Court, assuring that it has conducted a comprehensive investigation into the killing of gangster and former Member of Parliament (MP) Atiq Ahmed. The report was filed in response to a petition expressing concerns about "encounter killings" in the state. Atiq Ahmed was shot dead earlier this year while in police custody, with the incident captured on camera. The government's affidavit highlighted the measures taken to address security lapses, including the filing of a chargesheet against an arms clerk implicated in the crime. The report also outlined ongoing police reforms and modernization efforts, such as stricter handcuffing guidelines and the deployment of a Special Task Force to combat organized crime. The government emphasized its commitment to taking effective action against criminals and mentioned proposed amendments to relevant legislation. The Supreme Court is currently hearing the plea, which not only seeks justice for Atiq Ahmed but also calls for a judicial probe into other encounter killings in Uttar Pradesh, including the alleged fake encounter of gangster Vikas Dubey.
