Union Government Ordered by Supreme Court to Quickly Fill Vacancy in 6th National Commission for Scheduled Castes

On Thursday, the Supreme Court directed the Union of India to quickly fill a pending vacancy in the 6th National Commission for Scheduled Castes. The court was hearing a plea that had sought to fill vacancies in the Commission since 2017.

The bench, consisting of CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice PS Narasimha, and Justice JB Pardiwala, noted that while the vacancies in the earlier commission had been filled, there were still vacancies in the 6th National Commission for Scheduled Castes. The Union of India informed the court that the positions of Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, and two members had already been filled, leaving only one vacancy.

During the hearing, CJI Chandrachud remarked that the Union of India must ensure that the remaining vacancy is filled expeditiously. The court directed the government to take prompt action in filling the vacancy to ensure that the Commission is able to carry out its responsibilities effectively.
