Supreme Court Slaps ₹50,000 Costs on Petitioner Seeking 'Neutral Bench' Without Upper-Caste, OBC Judges for Reservation Case
In a recent ruling, the Supreme Court has imposed a fine of ₹50,000 on a petitioner who sought to have a special 'neutral' bench hear a reservation case pending before the Madhya Pradesh High Court. The petitioner's request aimed to exclude judges from upper-caste and other backward classes (OBCs) from the bench. The appeal, which arose from a Madhya Pradesh High Court order dismissing the request, was rejected by a bench comprising Justices Hrishikesh Roy and Pankaj Mithal. The Court termed the petitioner's move as an attempt to intimidate and influence the judicial process. The costs must be deposited with the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee within a month. The High Court had earlier declined to form a special bench, and around 48 petitions concerning OBC reservation in the State are pending before it.
