Supreme Court Grants Premature Release to Woman Convicted of Killing Twin Sons
The Supreme Court of India has granted premature release to a woman who had been behind bars for 20 years for the murder of her twin sons. The Tamil Nadu government had rejected her application for remission, arguing that she had committed a "cruel and brutal act" to continue her illicit relationship with her paramour. However, the Court noted that the petitioner had attempted suicide after a quarrel with her partner and concluded that it could not simply be considered a "cruel and brutal" offense.
The Court also reiterated its role as a judicial institution, stating that it is not its place to dictate morality and ethics to society but rather to uphold the rule of law while making decisions. The woman's remission had been recommended by the State Level Committee, but the application had been rejected by the government. The apex court found no valid grounds for the state government's decision and directed the woman's release unless required in any other case.
