Supreme Court: Priya Varghese's Appointment as Kannur University Assistant Professor Subject to Appeal Outcome

"Supreme Court Issues Notice on Priya Varghese's Appointment Challenge as Assistant Professor at Kannur University

The Supreme Court has taken cognizance of the challenge to the appointment of Priya Varghese as an Assistant Professor at Kannur University. Justices JK Maheshwari and KV Viswanathan have clarified that her appointment will be subject to the outcome of the appeals.

Two appeals have been filed before the apex court - one by the UGC and another by Dr. Joseph Skariah, a rival candidate who ranked just below Varghese in the list of candidates considered for the Assistant Professor position.

Today, the Supreme Court has sought responses from Priya Varghese, Kannur University, and the Kerala State Higher Education Department regarding the matter. Dr. Skariah has been asked to respond to the UGC's appeal, while the UGC has been directed to respond to Dr. Skariah's appeal.

Varghese's appointment has garnered significant media attention after Dr. Joseph Skariah challenged it before the Kerala High Court. In a previous ruling, a single-judge of the High Court held that Varghese lacked the required teaching experience for the post. Varghese subsequently appealed this decision before a division bench of the High Court.

Last month, the division bench ruled that her candidature could be reconsidered, taking into account the period spent pursuing her PhD under the faculty development program and her time on deputation as the Director of Student Services of the National Service Scheme of Kannur University.

The division bench also made critical observations about the undue media attention the case received during its adjudication before the single-judge."
