The Supreme Court has issued a notice to Yati Narsinghanand in response to a contempt of court petition filed by activist Shachi Nelli. Nelli accuses Narsinghanand of making derogatory remarks against the top court. The bench of Justices AS Bopanna and MM Sundresh issued the notice.
Narsinghanand allegedly stated that "those who believe in this system, these politicians, in the Supreme Court, and in the Army will all die the death of a dog." In October 2022, the Supreme Court had requested the transcripts of the statements made by the temple priest from the Danna Devi temple, which were in question.
Former Attorney General KK Venugopal granted consent to Nelli in January 2022 to initiate criminal contempt of court proceedings against Narsinghanand. Venugopal found Narsinghanand's remarks to be an attempt to undermine the authority of the Supreme Court in the eyes of the general public.
Under Section 15 of the Contempt of Courts Act, the consent of the Attorney General is required for the Supreme Court to hear a criminal contempt of court petition filed by a private individual.
Nelli's letter also mentioned that in a viral interview on Twitter, Narsinghanand expressed contempt for the Supreme Court and the Constitution of India, saying, "we have no trust in the Supreme Court of India and the Constitution. The Constitution will consume the 100 crore Hindus of this country. Those who believe in this Constitution will be killed."
Narsinghanand made these statements in response to questions about the proceedings in the Haridwar Hate Speech cases.
