The Supreme Court of India has announced that the next Advocates-on-Record examination is scheduled to take place in New Delhi from June 12 to June 15. As per the Rules 5(i) and 5(ii) of Order IV of the Supreme Court Rules, 2013, and Regulation 2 of the Regulations regarding Advocates-on-Record Examination made under the said rules, the top court has invited applications from eligible advocates to participate in the upcoming examination.
According to the eligibility criteria, advocates who have undergone a minimum of one-year continuous training from the end of the fourth year of their enrolment until Sunday, April 30, 2023, are eligible to take the examination. The candidates who would complete their training before the commencement of the examination will also be eligible. However, applications will be accepted only upon producing the requisite certificate of training from an Advocate-on-Record as per Regulation 6 of the Regulations regarding Advocates-on-Record Examination.
This announcement comes as a relief to many advocates who have been eagerly waiting for the examination amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The notification further provides a detailed breakdown of the application process and the syllabus for the examination.
Candidates Who Failed in Previous Examination Can Appear in a Single Paper
In a recent announcement, the Supreme Court of India has clarified that candidates who failed to secure 50 per cent in one paper in the previous examination but secured 40 per cent or more in that paper and 60 per cent in the aggregate, or failed to secure 60 per cent in aggregate despite passing in all papers, will be allowed to appear in a single paper of their choice in the upcoming Advocates-on-Record examination. However, such candidates will be eligible to appear in the examination afresh, subject to fulfilling other conditions.

Rules and Regulations for Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Exam Results
The Supreme Court of India has outlined the rules and regulations related to the results of the Advocates-on-Record examination. As per the notification, candidates who remain absent in any of the papers would be presumed to lack sufficient preparation for the examination and would not be given any further opportunity to appear, except for good reason and with the express permission of the Board of Examiners.
Candidates who are unsuccessful in all the papers of the examination will not be eligible to appear in the next examination. Additionally, candidates who do not appear in all the papers and fail in the others will be deemed to have failed in all the papers, including those in which they did not appear.
Each candidate can appear for a maximum of five chances to clear the examination. However, even appearing in a single paper shall be considered a chance under the regulations.
To pass the examination, candidates must obtain a minimum of 50 per cent in every individual paper and a combined aggregate of 60 per cent. The papers included in the examination are practice and procedure of the Supreme Court, drafting, advocacy and professional ethics, and ethics.
The notification makes it clear that there is no provision for re-evaluation of answer sheets, and no application or representation for the same will be entertained. However, candidates may seek other relief, except for re-evaluation, within 30 days of the declaration of results.
