National Legal Services Authority Nominates Justice Gavai for Key Role

In a notable development within India’s judicial framework, Supreme Court Judge, Justice B.R. Gavai, has been nominated as the Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee. This significant appointment was officially announced by the Department of Justice through a notification dated December 29, 2023.Justice Gavai’s nomination to this prestigious position was made by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), a pivotal organization in India’s legal landscape. The authority, in exercising its powers conferred by Section 3A of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, read with Rule 10 of the National Legal Services Authority Rules, 1995, chose Justice Gavai for this crucial role.The Supreme Court Legal Services Committee, under the stewardship of Justice Gavai, is tasked with a noble and significant mission. It is dedicated to providing legal aid and assistance to the weaker and marginalized sections of society, ensuring that justice is accessible to all, irrespective of their socio-economic background. This aligns with the broader objectives of the Legal Services Authorities, which play a critical role in upholding the principles of justice and equality in India.Prior to Justice Gavai’s appointment, the position of Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee was held by Justice Sanjiv Khanna, the Supreme Court’s senior-most puisne judge. Following his recent appointment as the Executive Chairperson of NALSA, Justice Khanna passed on this important responsibility to Justice Gavai.Justice Gavai’s appointment marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to enhance the reach and effectiveness of legal services in India.
