The Central government on Monday notified the appointment of judicial officer Arvind Kumar Verma as a judge of the Chhattisgarh High Court.Union Minister of State with independent charge of the Law and Justice Ministry Arjun Ram Meghwal tweeted the development.The Supreme Court Collegium had on January 4 recommended Verma's name for appointment as a High Court judge.According to the resolution passed in this regard by the collegium, Verma was recommended for elevation in August last year by the Chhattisgarh High Court collegium.The Supreme Court collegium had then consulted its fellow judges well versed with the affairs of the Chhattisgarh High Court and scrutinized all the material placed on record, including the report of the Judgment Assessment Committee.It was also stated that the Chief Minister and the Governor of the State of Chhattisgarh also concurred with the recommendation.
"Bearing in mind the views of the consultee-Judge on the suitability of the candidate, the report of the Judgment Assessment Committee and the assessment made by the Government of India in the file, the Collegium is of the considered view that the officer is suitable for appointment as a judge of the High Court of Chhattisgarh," the resolution had stated.
As on January 1, the Chhattisgarh High Court is functioning with 15 judges as against its sanctioned strength of 22 judges.A group of lawyers on Monday afternoon chanted Ram Dhun in the Bar Room of the Gujarat High Court to celebrate the inauguration of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. The event, video of which has gone viral on social media, was not an official function organised by the Gujarat High Court Advocates' Association (GHCAA). Confirming the same, advocate Virag Popat, the vice-president of the GHCAA, informed Bar & Bench that it was an informal function. "It was a random and informal function. It wasn't organised by the GHCAA or any one else. It was just like some lawyers, who were sitting there in the Bar Room, started chanting Ram Dhun and others joined. I was passing by the Bar Room and saw the crowd so I went inside and they were distributing some Prasad to everyone," Popat said. GHCAA General Secretary Hardik Brahmbhatt said that the chanting went on only for a few minutes and it wasn't during court hours.
