The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to the Central government on a plea to fill the vacant posts in the National Commission of Scheduled Castes.A Bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra sought the response of the government and posted the matter for hearing after four weeks.Even before the petitioner's counsel began to argue, the bench issued notice to the Union government. When the lawyer insisted that there are additional prayers, the bench remarked,"You want notice or not? We have issued notice."In April last year, a bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala had asked Centre to ensure that vacancies in the National Commission for Scheduled Castes are filled on an expeditious basis. The top court was then hearing a plea filed by Ambedkar Association for Development seeking to fill appointments to the post of Chairperson/Vice-Chairperson and Member of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes within a stipulated period. The National Commission for Scheduled Castes is an Indian constitutional body established to provide safeguards against the exploitation of Scheduled Castes and Anglo-Indian communities and to promote and protect their social, educational, economic and cultural interests.
