Former Mumbai police chief Sanjay Pandey, who is facing probes by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the illegal tapping of phones of National Stock Exchange (NSE) employees, has been granted bail by the Supreme Court. The court upheld the Delhi High Court's order granting bail to Pandey in a money laundering case registered against him by the ED. The bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Ahsanuddin Amanullah refused to interfere with the high court's order and clarified that the trial court should not be influenced by the observations made in the order under challenge. Pandey had earlier been denied bail by a special court in August last year, which was later overturned by the Delhi High Court in December 2022. The High Court had observed that the offences alleged did not constitute a scheduled offence under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and that even the offences punishable under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology (IT) and the Prevention of Corruption Act were not made out against Pandey. Pandey was represented by advocate Rahul Kamerkar in the case.
