Central Government Clears Appointment of Two Additional Judges as Permanent Judges in Andhra Pradesh High Court

The Central government has cleared the appointment of two additional judges of the Andhra Pradesh High Court as permanent judges. As per a notification dated March 10, Justices Boppana Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Chakravarthi and Tallapragada Mallikarjuna Rao have been made permanent judges of the Andhra Pradesh High CourtThe Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the appointment of these two additional judges as permanent High Court judges on February 13.At the time the Collegium had also recommended that Justice Duppala Venkata Ramana, who hails from the Andhra Pradesh High Court as well, be made a permanent judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.Notably, Justice Ramana had been transferred from Andhra Pradesh to the Madhya Pradesh High Court in October 2023, before the Supreme Court Collegium took a final call on the proposal to make all three additional judges permanent.The proposal to make all three additional judges permanent judges of the High Court had been unanimously passed on February 24, 2023, by the Andhra Pradesh High Court Collegium.This recommendation received the concurrence of both the Chief Minister and the Governor of the State.On August 17, 2023, the Supreme Court Collegium deferred consideration of the proposal after noting that the three proposed appointees had served only for about a year,Later, in January 2024, the Supreme Court Collegium decided to recommend that all three High Court judges be made permanent judges.Accordingly, Justices BVLN Chakravarthi and T Mallikarjuna Rao were recommended to be permanent judges of the Andhra Pradesh High Court.Justice DV Ramana was recommended to be a permanent judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court against one of the existing vacancies in the Andhra Pradesh High Court.This proposal to make Justice DV Ramana a permanent judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court has also been confirmed by the Central government, through a separate notification issued on Sunday.The Andhra Pradesh High Court is presently functioning with 30 judges against a sanctioned strength of 37 judges. Of the 30 judges, 22 were permanent judges while 8 were additional judges.
