Calcutta HC provides 'Dragon Legal' software to WB & Andaman judicial officers.

The Calcutta High Court has unveiled a significant initiative by introducing the distribution of Dragon Legal Speech Recognition Software to judicial officers serving in the regions of West Bengal and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This cutting-edge software, harnessing the power of artificial intelligence, is designed to provide invaluable support to judicial officers in their day-to-day responsibilities, particularly in situations where traditional support staff, such as stenographers, may be unavailable. The software achieves this by seamlessly converting spoken words into precise written text.

Emphasizing the transformative nature of this technological advancement, the High Court applauds the software's potential to redefine how legal professionals carry out their duties. By breaking away from conventional methods, judicial officers can leverage the benefits of this innovative tool to enhance efficiency and adaptability in their work. The Calcutta High Court views this move as a pivotal step in maintaining its position as a beacon of justice, committed to both efficiency and adaptability in the contemporary legal landscape.

During a ceremony commemorating the software distribution, Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam provided insights into the practical implications of adopting this technology. Chief Justice Sivagnanam, having personally experienced the software during a trial period, highlighted its utility in addressing the challenge of the shortage of stenographers in various districts, including the High Court itself.

Acknowledging the need for a solution, Chief Justice Sivagnanam shared, "There is a problem of lack of stenographers in the districts, as well as the High Court, and therefore the computer committee thought fit to provide this software along with compatible headphones, which will help you in dictating judgments." He commended the user-friendly nature of the software, emphasizing its adaptability to the nuances of Indian-English speech.

Expressing satisfaction with the software's performance, Chief Justice Sivagnanam disclosed that the government has approved a substantial sum of over Rs 4 crores for the procurement of 920 software licenses and compatible headsets. This financial backing underscores the commitment to ensuring that judicial officers have the necessary tools to perform their functions efficiently, reducing dependence on support staff.

Chief Justice Sivagnanam elaborated on the practical advantages of the software, stating, "This will enable the discharge of functions more efficiently and be less dependent on the support staff. Confidentiality will be preserved, you can carry it anywhere, do the dictation at your leisure." The portability and confidentiality features of the software are highlighted as key elements that contribute to its effectiveness in a legal setting.

In conclusion, the distribution of Dragon Legal Speech Recognition Software by the Calcutta High Court represents a forward-looking and pragmatic approach to addressing the challenges faced by judicial officers. By embracing advanced technology, the High Court aims to empower its officers, promote efficiency, and ensure the continued delivery of justice in a rapidly evolving legal landscape. This initiative stands as a testament to the court's commitment to innovation and its pursuit of excellence in the administration of justice.
